How to buy physical gold and silver for home delivery

Compare gold coins, silver coins and bullion bars before arranging a personal purchase. Learn what to ask about a dealer’s quote, payment, shipment and delivery terms.

01

Choose gold coins, silver coins, or bullion bars

Write down the metal, product, fine weight, and quantity you want to compare. American Eagle coins, Canadian Maple Leafs, and bar formats are common starting points for a discussion. Availability and condition must be confirmed for the actual order. A product illustration is not a live inventory listing.

02

Buying gold online: establish who is selling and what is quoted

Identify the actual selling business before providing payment information. A useful quote names the product, quantity, condition, currency and expiration time. A page that explains gold prices is not necessarily an offer to sell at that price. This website provides education and guides; it does not run an online checkout or show live inventory.

03

Buying 1 oz gold bars: specify the actual order

A search for a one-ounce gold bar does not identify a complete product. Ask for the refiner, fine troy-ounce content, fineness, condition and packaging. Confirm whether the quote is for a named brand or the seller’s choice, and whether substitutions need your approval. A sealed assay card may be part of the product description; it is not a substitute for verifying the seller and the item.

04

Gold Eagles, Maple Leafs and fractional coins

State the full coin name and fine gold weight. An American Gold Eagle can be sold in different sizes, and “one coin” is not a unit of metal content. For a Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, confirm the issue, size and condition too. If the seller quotes fractional coins, compare the combined fine ounces and delivered cost with the larger format you considered. These are shopping questions, not an inventory listing.

05

Buying silver coins or bars for delivery

Specify the fine silver weight, quantity and acceptable condition for each quote. Ask whether coins arrive individually, in tubes or in another package, and whether the package is part of the agreed price. For larger bars, consider how you would sell only part of the holding. Compare shipping and storage needs for the actual quantity rather than assuming a low price per piece means a lower total cost.

Read spot prices, bullion premiums and resale bids

06

Compare the complete purchase quote

Request the all-in amount and ask how long the quote remains open. Compare like products at the same time; a spot price alone does not tell you the premium or the delivered cost. Keep the product subtotal, payment terms, and delivery charges visible in your comparison.

  • What exact products and quantities would I receive?
  • When does the price become binding?
  • What is the current resale bid for those same items?
  • What happens if payment or shipment is delayed?
07

Confirm payment and delivery instructions

A personal purchase uses non-IRA funds. The seller may accept check or wire under its own terms. Verify the payee and instructions independently before payment. For a seller-arranged FedEx shipment, confirm tracking, signature requirements, and the written insurance arrangement. Declared value and insurance are different concepts; do not assume a standard carrier label covers bullion.

08

Decide how you will store the metals

Plan security and insurance before receiving delivery. Personal depository storage is another arrangement to discuss. Keep the invoice and receipt records, and understand the process to report a shipment problem promptly.

09

Buying with retirement money is a separate route

An IRA purchase needs the appropriate custodian, eligible products, and custody instructions. Home delivery for personal ownership should not be confused with storing metals for an IRA. Read the rollover overview if retirement funds are the starting point.

10

A home-delivery checklist for physical gold and silver

Confirm the arrangements in writing before agreeing to a purchase. Do not assume a generic shipping promise applies to your particular metal, address or order value.

  • Who arranges the shipment, and when is dispatch expected after payment clears?
  • Does the seller’s written insurance arrangement cover the actual contents and full order value?
  • Who must sign, and which delivery changes are allowed?
  • What should you do if packaging is damaged or an item is missing?
  • Who files a claim, and what notice deadline or documentation applies?
  • When does responsibility pass to you, and how will you store the metals afterward?
11

Can a gold IRA be delivered to your home?

A personal bullion purchase for home delivery is different from metals held within an IRA. IRA ownership has product and custody requirements. Do not substitute a home-delivery order for the custodian’s instructions. Ask the custodian and a qualified tax adviser about any proposed physical distribution before arranging shipment.
